35. How well does Atticus feel he should defend Tom Robinson? Is it usual for (white) lawyers to do their best for black clients in Alabama at this time?
Atticus feels strongly about defending Tom Robinson. Because if he didn’t defend Tom Robinson, he wouldn’t be able to hold his head high in town, he wouldn’t be able to represent the country in the state assembly.  It’s not usual for the white lawyers to defend the black clients.

Scout and Jem have “mixed feelings” about Christmas? What are these feelings and why?
These feelings are both good and bad feelings. The good feelings are that there is a tree and that they will meet their uncle Jack. The bad feelings are that they have to meet their aunt Alexandra and their cousin Francis.

37. Uncle Jack Finch tells Scout that she is growing out of her pants. What does this mean and why might he say it?
Uncle Jack Finch tells Scout that she’s trying to act older than her actual age. He says so because of the language she uses, and through her actions. 

38. When Francis talks to Scout he reveals an unpleasant feature of Aunt Alexandra. What is this?
It's that Aunt Alexandra is racist, like the rest of the town. She looks down on Dill, because of his family situation. She also talks bad about Atticus behind his back.

39. Does Scout learn anything from overhearing Atticus's conversation with Uncle Jack? What might this be?
Scout picks up a lot by listening in on the conversation. She discovered that adults make mistakes and do not always have the answers. But she also discovers that Atticus wants her to listen to him because he wants his children to get answers rather than listen to others. 

40. Read the final sentence of this chapter. Explain in your own words what it means and why it might be important in the story.
She thinks that he wanted her to hear what he said. It’s important to her because she didn’t understand it when she heard it, but when she’s older she will understand this
